Can CBD Help Treat Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid cancer affects the endocrine system which includes various glands and hormones that affect many of your body’s systems. While the root cause of thyroid cancer is unclear, certain environmental and genetic factors are believed to increase risk of the disease. Cannabinoids are a go-to for various cancer patients. Let’s explore how can CBD oil help thyroid cancer.

Thyroid Cancer affects the thyroid, a gland that impacts many of your body’s functions. This cancer appears in multiple forms. Other types of cancer patients take CBD oil for its therapeutic benefits, including pain management. This article delves into thyroid cancer and promising signs of CBD oil as a potential treatment.

What Is Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid cancer materializes within the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. This gland helps control several functions in your body, including heart rate, blood pressure, weight and body temperature. Initially, there are usually no symptoms of thyroid cancer, but they may develop as the disease grows:

•         Vocal changes

•         Neck or throat pain

•         Lump on the neck

•         Struggling to swallow

•         Enlarged lymph nodes

Is There One Type of Thyroid Cancer?

There are multiple types of thyroid cancer, usually categorized according to the type of cells found in associated tumor tissue:

•         Papillary: This is the most common and it originates from follicular cells, usually affecting patients between 30 and 50 years old.

•         Follicular: This type also comes from follicular cells, but it tends to affect those over the age of 50.

•         Anaplastic: This rare type also starts in the follicular cells, but it is aggressive and difficult to treat, usually affecting people over 60 years old.

•         Medullary: This type originates in the thyroid’s C cells which produce the hormone calcitonin. Early detection is possible if elevated levels of calcitonin are observed in the blood.

Other rare types of thyroid cancer exist such as thyroid lymphoma and thyroid sarcoma which begin with immune system cells and connective tissue cells, respectively.

How Can CBD Oil Help Thyroid Cancer?

Many people take CBD oil for swelling, a response to inflammation and pain management. More studies are needed to fully understand how CBD impacts thyroid cancer. There is promising research that suggests use of cannabis may induct endocannabinoid receptors, increasing the effectiveness of cancer gene therapy to treat anaplastic tumors. As with any medical treatment, consult your physician in advance.
