Toenail fungus or onychomycosis is experienced by nearly 10% of American adults. Onychomycosis is usually visually suspected but confirmed through lab tests to avoid misdiagnosis of other similar-looking conditions. While patients are usually older and male, there are several risk factors for toenail fungus. While CBD has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in treating toenail fungus.
Onychomycosis occurs in almost 10% of the adult population in the United States. Patients are more often male and older. This fungal infection is suspected by the appearance of the nails and confirmed by laboratory tests. What causes toenail fungus is generally considered to be certain types of fungi known as dermatophytes, candida yeasts and certain types of mold. While dermatophytes are usually the causative pathogens in temperate climates, candida and nondermatophytic molds are often the culprits in tropical, humid environments.
Common risk factors for toenail fungus include the following:
• Athlete’s foot or tinea pedis
• Exposure to onychomycosis in others
• Certain nail diseases
• Peripheral vascular disease
• Immunosuppression
It’s important to confirm onychomycosis as the condition can resemble other conditions, including nail psoriasis, lichen planus, contact dermatitis, yellow nail syndrome and certain tumors in the nail bed.
CBD oil is believed to offer several therapeutic benefits for those experiencing toenail fungus. CBD has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, and some research suggests that it may show promise in treating toenail fungus. Although the cannabinoids, cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabigerol (CBG) have been reported to fight various types of fungi, current research has not proven CBD’s efficiency in fungus treatment. If you’re curious about what type of CBD oil is the most effective – full/broad spectrum or isolate, CBC and CBG are often found in full or broad-spectrum products. Topical application is believed to be one of the best ways to apply CBD. Consult your physician about the best way to treat and manage toenail fungus before you buy. Your physician can provide guidance about the recommended dosage of CBD oil on a regular basis.
