Bladder disease may result from a rupture or obstruction, but for most, it’s due to a urinary tract infection or UTI. This painful condition is called cystitis and usually occurs due to an infection from bacteria or fungi. The most common risk factors are the female anatomy, catheter use and sexual activity. With millions of people affected, it’s worth looking into the potential of CBD, due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic benefits.
Of the types of bladder diseases out there, cystitis is the one that affects millions of people at least once. This condition develops usually as a result of a bacterial or fungal infection. Escherichia coli or E. coli is often the cause in most cases of cystitis or UTI. The most common risk factors for cystitis include the following:
• Female anatomy: Women tend to have shorter urethrae that are closer to the anus, increasing the risk of infection. The loss of protective vaginal flora associated with menopause also increases the risk of an infection.
• Sexual activity: Risk increases with the frequency of intercourse, but is not affected by the use of birth control pills or condoms without spermicide.
• Urinary catheterization: Healthcare use of catheters may expose the urinary system to a range of pathogens.
Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, family history and uncircumcision.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed as a treatment for cystitis. Concerns about antibiotic overuse and resistance has caused some to look elsewhere for treatment. CBD oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It’s worth exploring CBD for bladder pain and disease. Some studies have begun to explore the role of the endocannabinoid system in the urinary bladder of humans and other animals; however more research is needed to examine CBD oil for bladder inflammation. As always, consult your physician before starting a CBD regimen for bladder pain and infection.
